About
Susan Kempster

Susan Kempster is a choreographer, performer, teacher, theatre maker and movement coach/director. Originally from Sydney, Australia, her career has taken her to Tokyo, New York, Madrid and Barcelona, and she is now based in London.
Her choreographies have won first prizes at international choreography competitions in Madrid and Burgos, and her work has been presented in Europe, South America and the UK. In 2025, she was nominated for a National Dance Award for her choreography MOTHER, commissioned by Sadler’s Wells and funded by Arts Council England.
Susan makes work with highly skilled dancers that is sensual, musical and alive with the ambiguous theatricality that only dance can offer. At its heart is a desire to speak to human relationships and stories in ways that are nuanced, complex, intricate, gritty and tender.
She is the creator of Threading, a distinctive and deeply researched improvisation practice that she brings into dance institutions, professional companies and other contexts, supporting creative development and cultivating embodied wisdom, intuition and deep listening.
Her teaching spans vocational dance training, guest teaching for professional companies in Spain, Sweden and Germany, and workshops in improvisation, composition and choreography.
