Kangaroos in Iceland, Wallabies in Kent

Kangaroos in Iceland, Wallabies in Kent by Susan Kempster

Leaving was a beginning, but it felt more like stepping off the edge of a map. To go was a leap of faith, not in what lay ahead, but in the belief that something within would meet the unknown halfway. Home became a memory you carried like a stone: too heavy to throw away, too small to build with.

In the early days, you speak your language softly, as if apologizing for its texture. You study how others move, how they gesture toward belonging. You learn to be invisible, and later, too visible, until the two blur into a quiet ache of being almost from here.

Years pass. The roads you walk become familiar, and still the soil does not answer your name. You find yourself between worlds: fluent in both, native to neither. The exile has turned inward now, less about distance than about return, not to a country, but to coherence.

You understand, at last, that the quest was never to arrive anywhere. The return is not a journey but a transformation: to become someone capable of carrying many homes at once, none of them entire, all of them true.

And so you dance, not toward or away, but in the space between. The movement itself becomes the homeland, the only place that fits.
